A Shift in Market Trends

In the week of 15th, in 2024, bears secured their second consecutive victory, indicating a shift in market momentum. While short-term trends point downwards, the long-term view remains cautiously optimistic. Significant index drops included the Dow by 900 points, Nasdaq by 130 points, Russell by 61 points, and S&P 500 by 50 points, with in the last Friday experiencing its second-largest fall this year with 75 points after January 31 st move of 79 points in 2024.

Market in the Lower Range

Currently, the SPX lingers within the lower bounds of the first standard deviation range, suggesting a forthcoming week of range-bound or downward movement.

Global Sentiments Under Pressure

Global sentiments are on edge as tensions between Israel and Iran add a layer of geopolitical unease to the macroeconomic environment, contributing to the market's uncertainty.

Commodity Prices and Inflation Concerns

Despite market downturns, AAPL shows resilience, outperforming its peers and reflecting a shift in the tech sector. Rising commodity prices reaffirm persistent inflation, not yet conducive to a reduction in interest rates.

Volatility and Sentiment Indicators

The Volatility Index (VIX) stands elevated at around 17 points, marking a six-month high, with its term structure remaining in contango. The SKEW index sits at 142 points, and the Fear index has fallen from 56 to 46 since Friday. This time last year, the index was at 60, suggesting a growing undercurrent of fear and uncertainty in the market.

Correlation and Volatility

Strong index correlations persist, while volatility's positive market correlation signals a more pessimistic market outlook. Bond markets display an inverse relationship.

IWM IC

TRADE IDEA FROM MARK ==================== I wanted to offer a trade idea and get your feedback. It’s a small $1 iron condor spread on the IWM September quarterly’s, so it’s over in a relatively short time, but has a potential decent return. Although the IWM has been going up pretty strong the past two weeks (see chart below), I’m expecting a leveling out or lower rate of increase over the next 15 days which should keep it within the IC range. The credit is $.28, not a huge amount, but still decent for the risk. Remarks : Looks good to me. Range of IWM by 10/1 , I am expecting between 61 -58
